The United States responded to its own post-war boom with big ideas like putting a man on the moon, and China has certainly set its sights on improving its own standing.

A rail line connecting these four countries could have enormous global implications. Most importantly, it could largely scuttle the tanker industry (no pun intended) by allowing quick, efficient transfer for large quantities of oil — something China will need in the face of long-lasting resistance to new oil pipelines and expanded tanker service.
